"Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) are not just the backbone of our economy; they are the catalysts for sustainable development and social change," Dionne began. For instance, an innovative approach adopted by an SMME in the mining sector involved converting kitchen waste into biodiesel and fertilizers. This initiative not only reduced waste but also provided a sustainable energy source and organic fertilizers for local agriculture. Such examples illustrate how SMMEs are leading the way in sustainable practices, often outpacing larger companies in innovation and implementation.

Dionne stressed the importance of community-driven solutions for SMMEs. She pointed out that sustainable development requires funding models beyond traditional sources. Many SMMEs struggle to access conventional financing, which hampers their ability to scale sustainable initiatives. Therefore, innovative funding models that involve community investment, microfinance, and impact investing are crucial for the growth and sustainability of these enterprises.

A particularly inspiring example she shared was the empowerment of single mothers in townships through 3D printing businesses. These initiatives not only provide employment opportunities but also foster skills development in technology and manufacturing. By supporting single mothers to establish and grow their own 3D printing businesses, these projects contribute to education and health improvements within their communities. This example underscores the transformative power of SMMEs in addressing social challenges and driving economic development.

She concluded her session by emphasizing the need for collaboration and partnerships among stakeholders. She called for supportive policy frameworks that enable SMMEs to thrive. Leveraging cutting-edge technologies and fostering a culture of innovation are essential in this journey.
