It’s official – Cape Town will be hosting this climate-changing series annually for the next 10 years! Formula E is an FIA single-seater all-electric championship that is currently in its eighth season.

Formula E is the world’s fastest-growing international motor racing series and sees some of the biggest car and racing brands going head-to-head on city streets around the world. The fun and excitement of the series underpin a significantly more important message The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship actively promotes electric mobility, and renewable energy solutions to contribute to reducing air pollution and the fight against climate change around the world.

In September 2020, the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship became the first global sport to be certified with a net-zero carbon footprint from inception (ISO 20121). Average viewership has increased over the seasons to 411M in season 6, but importantly, social media engagement has increased to 867M in Season 5 (season 6 being impacted by COVID). Formula E fans are younger and more diverse with the average age and gender split being very different from other motorsport categories.

E-Movement, the rights holders of Formula E in Cape Town have curated a program of events, collectively called the E-Fest, in the week leading up to the race.

About the Events

  • The E-Fest Summit investment summit will be driving a 10-year program to tackle the renewable energy challenge the African continent faces. The E-Fest Summit aka Africa’s Green Economy Summit aims to showcase and marry African green economy opportunities with global initiatives. The Summit will feature invited guests from African government/s, the corporate sector, and industry leaders with best-case innovations to share.
  • The E-Fest Classic is a championship-standard golf invitational event hosted in the week leading up to the Cape Town E-Prix hosted by one of South Africa’s global golfing icons.
  • The E-Fest Ride is a public engagement opportunity to experience the concept of E-mobility on a Cape Town E-Prix.
  • There will be an E-Mobility Festival to experience all things electric in this B2B and B2C festival/exhibition from bicycles, scooters, boats, motor vehicles, etc.
  • The Cape Town E-Prix Day features two practice sessions, the main race, and lots of family-friendly activities. (Provisionally booked for the last weekend of February 2023).
